While the weather outside isn't exactly frightful yet, some Nebraskans may need a reminder that wind chills will plummet and snow will fly one day very soon.
Today (Thursday) is Winter Weather Awareness Day, according to meteorologist Jeff Johnson, at the National Weather Service.
Jeff Johnson:
The National Weather Service is offering that information on its website - www.weather.gov.
Last year we didn't really experience much of a winter in Nebraska but weather patterns are much different this year. USDA Meteorologist Brad Rippey says last year a strong jet stream swept cold air out of the country. This year there is a high pressure system parked over the northern Atlantic not letting that cold air go anywhere.
Brad Rippey:
Rippey says we also need to remember it is very difficult to predict what high pressure systems will do so it is still a game of wait and see.
