Pain medication addiction is on the rise in Nebraska with some law enforcement officials calling it an epidemic.

University of Nebraska Medical Center Assistant Psychiatry Professor Dr. Aly Hassan says availability makes a difference.

Dr. Aly Hassan: 

That being that a lot of pain medication is in circulation, and can be mis-used.

Hassan says individual doctors must better control the flow of pain medication, and he proposes a national registry of prescribed narcotics be kept.
