CHADRON, Neb. (AP) - Those owing fines more than a year in arrears at the Chadron Public Library can see the fines forgiven over the next two weeks - if they bring in food donations for local food pantries.

The Panhandle Post reports (http://bit.ly/QWquBn) that the amnesty period began Saturday. It's being offered to those who bring in two non-perishable, non-expired food items for distribution to local food pantries for every $5 owed in fines.

Library Director Rosella Tesch says the idea is to clear old fines off the books while helping with the Chadron community's Christmas celebration.

The amnesty program runs through Dec. 15.
