Lanner says in Nebraska, more than 230-thousand seniors receive Social Security and the average benefit is $13,900 a year. That is about 64% of an older Nebraskans income. One of the changes would lower the cost of living adjustment and that would take 830-million dollars out of the pockets of those on S.S. in Nebraska over the next 10 years.
They are also considering increasing the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 67.
The fiscal cliff debate could have a huge impact on many Nebraskans. AARP-Nebraska spokesperson Deborah Lanner says a shortsighted budget deal could have a big impact on the health and retirement security of senior citizens. On the table is an adjustment to Social Security benefits.
