Colorado's gun control debate got going in divisive fashion Monday, when Republicans and Democrats parted ways on a proposal to allow teachers to carry concealed weapons

DENVER (AP) - Colorado's gun control debate got going in divisive fashion Monday, when Republicans and Democrats parted ways on a proposal to allow teachers to carry concealed weapons.

A Democratic committee voted on a party-line 3-2 decision to reject a GOP measure to allow schools to decide whether employees could carry concealed weapons.

The vote came hours after more than 100 gun-control supporters rallied on the Capitol steps calling for an assault weapons ban, plus ammunition limits and expanded background checks as ways to prevent gun violence.

Democrats say they're planning to propose those measures, but specific bills haven't yet been introduced.
