The Nebraska State Treasurer's office says it returned $1.2 million in previously unclaimed property in January
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The Nebraska State Treasurer's office says it returned $1.2 million in previously unclaimed property in January.
Treasurer Don Stenberg said in a news release Tuesday that $560,000 was paid out in cash to rightful owners, and $655,000 was paid in stock and safekeeping items. Stenberg says the amount of money returned to Nebraskans in one month is unusual.
One woman received more than $60,000 in cash, as well as items from a safe deposit box valued at more than $232,000. A Colorado man who was born in Nebraska received more than $60,000 in cash, plus safe-deposit items valued at more than $217,000.
The treasurer's office says it is holding more than $125 million for more than 350,000 Nebraskans and former Nebraskans.
