Gov. Dave Heineman is seeking applicants who are eligible to fill a district seat on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Gov. Dave Heineman is seeking applicants who are eligible to fill a district seat on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.

The governor's office is accepting applications through the close of business on March 8. The new regent will represent District 5, an area that covers a portion of southeast Nebraska.

The seat had been held by Lavon Heidemann, a former state lawmaker who was elected to the board in November. Heidemann resigned his post on Wednesday after Heimeman asked him to serve as Nebraska's new lieutenant governor.

The person who fills the board seat will stand for election in 2014.

Applications details are available on the governor's website.
