DENVER (AP) - Heavy snow is falling in southern Colorado as a winter storm sweeps across the state.
National Weather Service forecaster Jim Kalina said Thursday up to 10 inches of snow has fallen from Colorado Springs south to the Colorado border, with most of the state getting around 1 to 4 inches.
As many as 100 cars were forced to turn around after they got stuck on roadways in Colorado Springs due to icy conditions Wednesday night.
Kalina says the storm tracked farther south than expected, hitting Arizona and New Mexico.
"It definitely wasn't as heavy as we expected in some areas," Kalina said.
The Colorado Department of Transportation dispatched hundreds of snow plows across the state, but the only major closure was on Interstate-70 westbound near Wolcott because of an accident.
