DENVER (AP) - The Colorado House is debating a bill granting civil unions for gay couples, with Democratic House Speaker Mark Ferrandino telling colleagues that the bill is about family, love, and equality under the law.
The proposal is expected to get initial approval Monday. A final vote this week sends it to Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper, who will sign the bill.
The measure was one of the most contentious bills of last year's session. Democrats had enough votes to pass it, but Republicans in the House prevented debate to defeat the proposal.
Democrats now control both chambers and Ferrandino is the first gay House speaker in Colorado history.
Republicans have tried to amend the bill to include religious exemptions for those opposed to civil unions. Democrats say that opens the door to discrimination.
