Nebraska's attorney general has issued a consumer alert for scam letters that claim to be from an international lottery

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska's attorney general has issued a consumer alert for scam letters that claim to be from an international lottery.

Jon Bruning says the letters purport to be from the Publishers Clearinghouse International Lotto Division. Fraudulent cashier's checks drawn on fake accounts from First State Bank Nebraska have been included in hundreds of letters received nationwide.

Similar letters have been reported in at least 40 other states, including California, Texas, Illinois, Oklahoma and Arizona.

FSB Nebraska representatives have returned more than 180 fraudulent checks that were determined to be counterfeit over the last few weeks.
